• Put up a new satellite dish, Sky, Freesat or any other, or a TV aerial, on the wall or the roof, aligned and cabled to the room you want. Replace one that has had it.
• Extend the Sky, Freesat or satellite feed to a bedroom or the garden office and fit a new F-connector wall socket.
• Extend the aerial feed to a bedroom or the kitchen and fit a coax socket.
• Move a Virgin Media TV or broadband point from one wall to another, or from one room to the next.
• Run a new aerial connection from one bedroom to another. That one is in the reviews.
• Combined plates: ethernet and satellite on one faceplate behind the TV, labelled SKY and TV by hand so nobody plugs the wrong lead in.
• Swap tatty old coax boxes for a clean plate, and tidy coax that has been dangling since the nineties.

Dishes and aerials

A new dish or aerial goes on the wall or the roof with my own ladders. I align it, check the signal at the socket end and clip the feed down the wall the same way as any other outside run, with a drip loop and a grommet where it goes in. An old dish that has rusted or been knocked out of line by the wind gets replaced or re-aligned rather than patched. If the dish is fine and it’s the cable that’s the problem, I’ll say so and just do the cable.

How the cable goes in

Coax follows the same rules as my ethernet work. Outside, it’s clipped along the mortar line and comes through the wall with a grommet and a drip loop, so rain drips off the bottom of the loop instead of following the cable in. Inside, it goes behind the skirting, in slim trunking, or through the loft and under the floor where that’s neater. At the room end you get a proper wall socket, not a lead trailing under the door. I plug your box into it and check the picture before I pack up.

If you’re on Sky Glass or Sky Stream, the box has an ethernet port on the back and streams over your broadband, so the fix for buffering is a wired ethernet socket behind the TV, not more coax. What I need to know

Where the dish, the aerial or the Virgin Media wall box comes into the house now, and where you want the new socket. A photo of each is plenty, plus your postcode. For a new dish or aerial, add a photo of the outside wall or roofline where it would go. Extra boxes and subscriptions are Sky’s side of it, not mine.

What it costs

No price list, because a socket two metres from where the dish cable comes in and a new dish on the roof with a run to three rooms are not the same job. The figure depends on whether a dish or aerial is going up, how far the coax runs, how awkward the route is and how many sockets you want.
